Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters was founded by Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the bishop of Đakovo. Opened in 1884. it showcases an impressive collection of fine art.
Throughout Strossmayers life, he collected numerous works of art. From the 15th century Italian Primitives to contemporary Croatian painters of his own time.
The gallery and the palace opened its doors in containing 256 works of art. Since then the gallery has enriched its collection by acquisitions and donations from philanthropists.
Today, the Strossmayer Gallery holds a respectable collection of European paintings from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century.

The Strossmayer Gallery is filled with fine art. Although the current holdings number around 4000 artworks they only showcase around 250. The rest are in holding or given to other galleries for them to display.
Do not forget to get a glimpse of the Baska Tablet in the courtyard. It is the oldest Glagolitic script dating from 1102.
