Project Description

Zrinski Mine – Experience a Miners Life

Zrinski Mine is a Middle Ages silver mine. Renovated in 2004 it is the only mine in Croatia open to the public. Learn about the daily life of miners from the Middle Ages.

TIP: THE LONG TUNNELS HAVE FEMALE NAMES! BECAUSE MINERS BELIEVED THAT WOMEN BROUGHT LUCK TO THE MINE. LEGEND SPEAKS OF SECRET PASSAGES CONNECTED WITH MEDVEDGRAD FORT AND ST. MARK’S CHURCH.

Zrinski Mine is located in an area called Miner’s Garden, close to mountain lodge Grafičar. The mine started to operate in the 16th century and was owned by the Zrinski Family.

Unfortunately, the mine was never productive in spite of superhuman efforts. For example, they needed to mine a ton of galena in order to get half a kilogram of silver.
For this reason, the mine was finally closed in the middle of the 17th century.

It stayed closed until 2004. When it was renovated by the Nature Park Medvednica making it the first mine in Croatia open to the public.

The medieval mine holds many intriguing exhibits and is fully accessible for visitors.

Inside you will find the St. Barbara chapel, as well as in every mine in Croatia. After all, she is the patroness of miners.
