Zagreb ZOO – animal friendly little ZOO

Zagreb ZOO is one of the best ZOO-s in this part of Europe! They keep animals in their natural environment and for this reason, we call it an animal-friendly little ZOO. Amazing value and a great place to spend an afternoon with the kids!

TIP: FOR THE BEST EXPERIENCE CHECK OUT THE FEEDING TIMETABLE AND KEEPERS TALK. YOU CAN ALSO BECOME AN ANIMAL ADOPTER!

Zagreb ZOO is surrounded by 200-year-old Maksimir Park and its oak trees, the biggest Zagreb Park. For this reason, it is a great place to relax and spend an afternoon with the kids. A nice change from churches and tile roofs.

It is spread over 19 acres including lakes and ponds. Zagreb ZOO is home to 2,225 animals representing 275 species.

You will have the opportunity to see rare and exotic snow leopard and red panda. We are especially proud of the latest enclosure, the African Lion Rock “Kidepo”.

Zagreb ZOO is small opposed to European ZOOs. Nevertheless, animals come first to them, so special attention is devoted to the construction of quality dwellings. They try to mimic natural habitats as much as possible.

The ZOO opened its doors in the year 1925. In fact, it is the oldest ZOO in Southeast Europe.

The first part of Zagreb ZOO renovation finished in October 2016, and they are only halfway there.

What can you see and do in Zagreb ZOO?

A visit to the Zagreb ZOO will remain in everyone’s memory. It will take you around 3 hours to see everything. And I believe it to be just right, not too dull, nor to exhausting for kids.

I definitely recommend visiting and entering the Lemur Island and the Free-Flight Aviary for African Birds. You can enter the habitat and experience the animals from close by. You are not allowed to interact and feed the animals, but it is definitely a unique experience you will cherish.

You can buy a souvenir in a gift shop, refresh yourself in a cafe or visit the educational centre. Zagreb ZOO offers a historical and architectural inheritance as well. The most famous is a bridge with stone lions. The oldest object in the ZOO is turret from the year 1926 which used to be an enclosure.

If you are physically disabled you might find getting to some exhibitions hard but mostly it should be ok.

What is the best time to go to Zagreb ZOO?

For the best ZOO experience visit the ZOO during feeding time.

Any warm and sunny days are perfect for the ZOO. The Maksimir Park will provide you with natural shade and it will be the perfect day for your family. While some 3 hours are enough to visit the ZOO, you can always continue your visit with a walk or picnic in the Maksimir Park. The Park has some sights of its own.

By all means, check the ZOO schedule as there are loads of amusing and educative seasonal events.  Such as Eco Academy, ZOO Olympics, Abrakadabra ZOO and many more.

How to get to Zagreb ZOO?

The ZOO is easy to reach by public transport, exit on the “Bukovačka” station.

Take the trams 11 or 12 from the city centre or ban Josipa Jelačića square. Go east (Dubec) till the Bukovačka stop. The entrance to the Maksimir Park is on the northern side of the street.

Trams number 4 and 7 go from the Savski Most terminal to the Zoo.

If you are leaving from the Zagreb Bus Station, take tram number 7 heading north.

If you are leaving from the Zagreb Train Station, take tram number 4 heading east.

Zagreb ZOO parking

The biggest public parking is located across the Maksimir Park near the western side of the Dinamo soccer stadium.

You can reach the parking lot from Donje Svetice Road by turning right on the stile immediately after the bus stop and before the traffic light intersection of Donje Svetice and Maksimirska Road.

Parking Zone 3. Read our guide about Zagreb Parking, Garages and Zones, Where to Park in Zagreb? We update it regularly with the latest rates, and guides on how to pay for parking in Zagreb.

Taxi or UBER is always an option.
