Stone Gate is the eastern gate to medieval town and Zagreb’s most important shrine. The only remaining entrance of Zagreb’s old fortifications.

TIP: EVERY TUESDAY AT 8 PM LOCAL PEOPLE PRAY THE ROSARY AT THE STONE GATE. THEY SING AND SHARE THEIR PERSONAL PRAYER AND EXPRESS THEIR WISHES. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Stone gate is the only gate preserved today. It was built in 13th century as one of four main gates leading to the town.

Together with St. Mark’s church, it stands as a living testimony to past times and free royal Gric city, a predecessor to Zagreb.

Within the gate, you will find a shrine and stone slabs praising the Mother of God. The shrine of our lady of the Stone Gate houses the painting of the Mother of God. Which miraculously survived the 17th-century fire and is protected by an artistically forged iron fence.

The square stone slabs are engraved all over, within the gate passage. These stone slabs present locals thanks and praise to the Lady Virgin. You will notice most of them have the word “Hvala Ti”, which is translated to “Thank You”.

The Gate is regularly visited by people who come to light a candle and thank the Lady for protecting them.

As you walk through you are passing between the Upper and Lower town. Stop for a minute and feel the peace and tranquillity of flickering candlelight and silent prayer.

Lighting Candles is allowed Monday through Saturday from 8 AM until 5 PM. On Sunday from 9 AM until 12 PM.

What can you see and do at the Stone Gate?

The Stone Gate is one of the entrances to medieval Upper Town. While walking through feel free to stop by, light a candle, pray and make a wish knowing that someone is protecting you.

You can feel the peace at this place!

Close by you can find a statue of Dora Krupiceva, a beautiful heroine from a novel “The Goldsmith’s Gold” written by August Senoa.

Likewise, the oldest pharmacy in Zagreb is located in the same street, working continuously since 1355.

How to get to the Stone Gate?

Accessible on foot from Zagreb ban Jelačić square. Just head north through Radićeva street.

We also recommend taking the funicular first, and then on your way back from Upper Town pass through the Stone Gate.
