Ethnographic Museum Zagreb
Ethnographic Museum Zagreb presents Croatia’s cultural heritage through the ages. Explore the traditional way of life in Croatia.
TIP: WE RECOMMEND TO START FROM THE TOP. ON THE 1ST FLOOR YOU CAN EXPERIENCE CROATIA’S TRADITIONS. THE GROUND FLOOR EXHIBITS EXTRA-EUROPEAN CULTURES AND TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS.
Ethnographic Museum Zagreb holds a vast collection of more than 85.000 items, but only 2800 are on display in the museum.
The museum took special attention to collecting material cultural objects. Items such as ceremonial dresses, laces, music instruments, furniture, cooking utensils and tools.
The Croatian folk costumes, which can be found on the first floor, are arranged according to the three ethnographic zones:
- Pannonian
- Dinaric
- Adriatic
They showcase festive costumes from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
Not only can you experience the traditional Croatian way of life, but the museum also displays artefacts from Africa, Australia, Asia, South America and the South Seas. The ground floor displays have been donated by Dragutin Lerman, Mirko and Stevo Seljan.
The museum itself is situated in a former one-time Trades Hall of 1903. A Secession building designed by the architect Vjekoslav Bastl.
