Croatian Natural History Museum – Amazing Insect Collection

Croatian Natural History Museum is one of the oldest museums in Croatia. They hold one of the largest collections of artefacts and animal specimens.

Croatian Natural History Museum, founded in 1846 is the oldest and biggest natural history museum in Croatia. In addition, they have one of the biggest museum collections. A collection which holds of over 2 million artefacts and over 1 million animal specimens.

Housed in the former Amadeo theatre, the first theatre in Zagreb, the museum holds a diverse collection.  They conserve a collection of prehistoric tools and remains of Krapina Neanderthal. One of the most important Neanderthal collections in Europe.

Not only do they hold over 2 million rocks, minerals, fossils, and other artefacts. They also have a zoological collection which consists of over 1.1 million animal specimens.

The museum today is divided into Mineralogical-Petrographical, Geological-Palaeontological, Zoological and Botanical Departments. Each with collections of their own and collected in Croatia.

Their library holds a substantial scientific library open to the public. One of the most important works beeing the 17th-century old Italian works by Ulisse Aldrovandi, Niccolò Gualtieri and Carl Linné.

What can you see and do at Croatian Natural History Museum?

The museum exhibits some pretty unique displays.

One of them, a Lion’s Pit. Exhibiting the remains of a 3.6 meters cave lion, which is claimed to be one of the biggest found in the world.
The other is the reconstruction of an extinct giant shark Megalodon.

You can also experience their amazing insect collection and first moss animal exhibition in the world.

The Geological Pole and the Rock Map of Croatia should not be missed. Not only do they decorate the museum atrium as fixed permanent exhibits. But also the Rock Map of Croatia is a mosaic map assembled from various pieces of rock found in Croatia.

The exhibitions are accessible for visually impaired.

During summer they hold AMADEO Classical Theatre, Music & Film Scene in the atrium of the Museum.

Amadeo performs around fifty theatre performances, concerts and film events with more than two hundred renowned Croatian and foreign artists.

How to get to Croatian Natural History Museum?

The museum is situated in Upper Town.

From ban Jelačić square it is accessible on foot. Take the Zakmardi steps or Radićeva Street through the Stone Gate and by St. Marks church.

On the other hand, you can take the shortest funicular ride.
