Project Description

Art Pavilion Zagreb – Oldest and the Most Beautiful Gallery

Art Pavilion Zagreb was and always will be a dynamic scene of events. During its 120 years of history, the pavilion has hosted important exhibitions. From Picasso, LeWitt, Goldoni, Rodin, Henry Moore, Meštrović, Bukovac and Murtić to Warhol, Nasta Rojc, Marija Braut and many others.

TIP: IT IS THE OLDEST GALLERY IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE. THE BUILDING IS ONE OF THE FIRST PREFABRICATED BUILDINGS IN EUROPE.

Art Pavilion Zagreb does not have a permanent display. On the contrary, it specialises in one-off solo and group exhibitions. Representing works by both Croatian and foreign artists from all periods and styles.

It was constructed in 1897 and for this reason, it is the oldest gallery in Southeast Europe.

Vlaho Bukovac urged all Croatian artists to present their works in a purpose-built Pavilion during the May 1896 a Millennium Exhibition in Budapest. The Pavilion was constructed around a prefabricated iron skeleton.
After the exhibition, the building’s skeleton was transported to Zagreb. Viennese architects of the Croatian National Theatre designed the new version of the building in stunning art-nouveau style.

The eastern facade displays busts of

  • Giulio Clovio (Julije Klović)
  • Andrea Schiavone (Andrija Medulić)

The western facade has busts of
